Empowering change empowering Tech

Mark your calendars. Oddly enough, today may be the day that Marky Mark (no Funky Bunch) joins the company of greats like Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Will Smith, Russell Crowe, etc. Today, The fighter opens in theaters across the country. With so much buzz and praise the movie has received, this could end up being one of the best boxing movies of all time.

In the light of The fighterlaunch, I thought now would be an appropriate time to make that list. My best boxing movies. The sport has been visited many times throughout the history of cinema. Here, however, we narrow it down to the top 10. So without further ado, my top 10 boxing movies.

10. Play it to the bone
Play it to the bone It was written and directed by Ron Shelton. The film stars Antonio Banderas and Woody Harrelson. Lolita Davidovich co-stars.

The movie is the story of two aging wrestlers, César (Banderas) and Vincent (Harrelson), who are close friends. In the twilight of their careers, the two have one last fight with a title at stake. The catch: they will be fighting each other. The two boxers and friends left for Las Vegas for their undercard fight, accompanied by Grace (Davidovich); Cesar’s girlfriend and Vincent’s ex. Along the way, we take a look at their past careers and competitive friendship. When it comes time for the fight, what should have been a typical fight no one has an interest in, soon turns into the fight of the night when the two of them hit each other like hell. Cesar and Vincent leave everything in the ring, with something to prove to themselves and others, “they play to the bone.” A definitive fight to remember.

Now, Play it to the bone it was quite criticized. Call it my taste for Woody Harrelson, or my cheesy loser side, but I enjoyed it. There’s a lot of humor, a fun road trip, and a great fight. Okay, it’s not the best of movies, but it’s definitely one of my favorite boxing movies.

9. resurrecting the champion
Resurrecting The Champ was written by Michael Bortman and Allison Burnett. It was directed by Rod Lurie and starred Samuel L Jackson and Josh Hartnett.

Hartnett plays a young sports writer who rescues a homeless “Champ” (Jackson) only to discover that “Champ” is a boxing legend believed to be dead. Then the writer sets out to resurrect Champ’s story and elevate his own career. The movie is based on a true story and an LA Times Magazine article of the same name.

Okay, this movie isn’t so much about boxing, rather that’s the underlying theme as it’s about an unlucky ex-boxer and sports writer looking to restore the homeless man and resurrect his story. What begins as a story to resurrect a man who was once great, turns into an examination of life and family. Samuel L Jackson makes for a very good acting in this movie. By bringing such a level of humanity to the character, Jackson’s performance stands out in the movie above all else and you can’t help but feel for Champ all the time.

8. Ali
Written by Gregory Allen Howard and Stephen J. Rivele, Ali It was directed by Michael Mann. Will Smith plays the title role of boxing icon and legend Muhammad Ali. Other roles include Jamie Foxx playing Ali’s cornerback Drew Bundini Brown. Jon Voight also plays the famous sportswriter Howard Cosell.

Ali is a biographical film of the legendary boxer. Take a look at his career from his title fight with Liston, to his conversion to Islam and the famous Rumble in the Jungle.

Will Smith has an excellent performance as the iconic boxer, even gaining significant weight to land the role. Voight has a great acting too, as Foxx does a good job too. On top of all that, the realism of the fights is like no other in any other movie, really. All fighters are played by professional boxers. They decided there would be no “illusion” in the fights in this movie, but they settled on the real deal. Even the fights involving Muhammad Ali are real. For example, in Ali’s fight with Foreman in the movie, Shufford (who played Foreman) was allowed to hit Will Smith as hard as he could to contribute to the realism. The only rule: don’t really knock out Smith. With some great performances, some great fights, and a look at the boxing icon, Ali it is definitely good to see.

7. The hurricane
Based on books The 16th round by Rubin Carter and Lazarus and the hurricane by Sam Chaiton and Terry Swinton, The Hurricane is directed by Norman Jewison. Denzel Washington stars in the title role.

The hurricane is the biopic of boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. Carter was wrongly jailed for a triple murder and spent 20 years in prison before being pardoned. Although it is not so much a boxing movie, The hurricane it’s more of a redemption story. A story about how love can conquer hatred and injustice. Washington delivers one of the best performances of his career as Hurricane and his followers seek to fight the racism and hatred that imprisons him.

6. Requiem for a heavyweight
Based on a script written by Rod Serling, Requiem for a Heavyweight is directed by Ralph Nelson. The film stars Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, and Mickey Rooney.

Anthony Quinn plays Mountain Rivera, a late-career boxer after taking a beating from Cassius Clay. Being a proud man, Mountain must put that pride aside to save a friend. Upon learning that the manager bet against him, Mountain can only save his manager’s life by diving into a wrestling match …

Requiem for a heavyweight provides a tight story and a memorable (even heartbreaking) story. With strong characters, Quinn does a great job playing the burned-out boxer. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie happens at the beginning. Doing a point of view sequence (from Quinn’s point of view), the film chronicles Mountain’s fight with Cassius Clay as bursts of blows fly towards the screen / camera as Clay punches Mountain.

5. Diggstown
Written by Leonard Wise and Steven McKay. Directed by Michael Ritchie. Diggstown stars James Woods and Louis Gossett Jr. Oliver Platt and Bruce Dern also star in the film.

Diggstown is the story of a con artist (Woods), fresh out of prison, who stumbles upon a small town obsessed with boxing to carry out his latest con. Bet with the local mogul that you know a man who could knock out 10 men in 24 hours. The businessman (Dern) accepts that bet. The con artist’s fighter: 48-year-old fighter Honey Roy Palmer (Gossett Jr).

Diggstown it’s a pretty funny movie with a good cast. You get a hilarious scam / heist / mischief-type movie mixed in with a losers-style boxing movie, making for an enjoyable moment.

4. Cinderella Man
Written by Cliff Hollingsworth and directed by Ron Howard. Starring Russell Crowe. Renee Zellweger and Paul Giamatti also star.

Cinderella Man is the story of heavyweight champion James Braddock. After breaking his hand, the boxer’s career seemingly ends. He becomes a depressed man trying to survive to support his family. That is until the day his former manager gives him a fight to be basically a “punching bag” for the world’s number two contender. However, to everyone’s surprise, Braddock scores a knockout against the contender. This adds a spark to his career when Braddock returns to the ring.

Cinderella Man it’s a great homeless tale that is an inspiring story. Although initially it did not do well in theaters, the film was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences. He was nominated and awarded with various awards. With the movie itself Crowe, Giamatti and Hollingsworth received awards for their roles in this movie, it is definitely one of the best boxing movies of all time and a truly inspiring story.

3. The harder they fall
Written by Budd Schulberg and Philip Yordan. Directed by Mark Robson. The harder they fall starring Humphrey Bogart in his last role before his death in 1957.

The harder they fall is the story of an unemployed sportswriter Eddie Willis (Bogart) who is hired by a corrupt promoter to publicize his new boxer. The new boxer is a great and impressive Argentine boxer, but ultimately without talent. The plan is for the corrupt promoter to build his fighter through organized fights and then bet against him in a title fight. Eddie is then left in a puzzle after starting to like the giant boxer, and struggles with himself over whether or not to tell the Argentine that his fights were fixed.

Bogie delivers a solid performance in his latest movie (which he was already sick of). The film is a brave film for its time and stands as a very pleasant examination of the influence of the mob on boxing.

2. Rocky
Rocky is written by and starring Sylvester Stallone. While the first was directed by John G. Avildsen, the sequels were directed by Stallone himself.

For the sake of simplicity, I will include all Rocky movies here together. While some may argue as to which was their favorite, I still pick the first one as the best. Rocky It is THE homeless story of all homeless stories. The original is the story of a small-time boxer who has the opportunity to fight the champion and shows the world his heart and talent.

Rocky it is absolutely a classic. It is an inspiring and memorable movie. This movie is what put Stallone on the map. The film received Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, and a nomination for Best Actor. It is also listed in AFI’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time. Rocky is a must see for any fan of the genre and arguably the best of his kind in the sports movie arena for many.

1. Angry Bull
Written by Jake LaMotta and Joseph Carter. Directed by Martin Scorsese. Starring Robert De Niro. It also stars Cathy Moriarty and Joe Pesci.

Raging bull It’s the emotional journey of self-destructive boxer Jake LaMotta, as the violence and temperament that lead to success in the ring contribute to the undoing of his life outside the ring.

Many would say Rocky gets first place. Yet while I love Rocky, Raging bull It is the best film. This is possibly Scorsese and De Niro’s best work. A true classic. Raging Bull is a fearless version of sport and masculinity, as well as a look at personal demons. This is the movie that put Pesci on the map and spawned the famous De Niro and Pesci couple. It is a must-see movie and one of the best movies of all time.
