The decorating options are limitless when it comes to dressing up a living room; however, there are some things that just don’t belong in the living room. Our list of do’s and don’ts for living room decor isn’t long, but it should be kept in mind whenever it comes to living room decor in general. The more you follow, the more you save yourself from ridicule and of course bad design karma.

We all know that you love your family and you have a lot of photos to prove it, but keep a few in the photo album. In fact, at the top of our living room decorating list is an overabundance of family photos. While you may think little Bobby looks cute as a half-naked two-year-old in the bath, it may seem strange to others and, in fact, Bobby himself may be embarrassed by this image. It’s examples like this that prove that living room decor should be kept minimal in terms of family photos. If you have more than a dozen in the room, it might be time to consider whether you’re a part of this living room décor.

Too modern, it’s just stupid. If you like the exotic, be sure to balance the exotic with the basics to create a pleasing look. We don’t need to feel like we’re stepping into a space shuttle every time we walk into your living room, if you like modern furniture; This living room decoration is not for you. Be sure to limit modern furniture to no more than 75% of the room’s décor. That means for every 3 modern pieces of furniture, you need at least 1 basic, non-modern piece of furniture to balance out the look.

You’re looking for a bar fight, if not, don’t make your living room a pub. One of the most common living room decorating is not the pub nature of some living rooms, trying to go for the playful theme. While a dart board and pool table might be nice, when one starts installing the beer taps and teak bars one is bound to go crazy. While this could be great for a basement, if your living room is something you value, you don’t want to cause problems like that. After all, a living room designed for a pub will inevitably draw a pub-going crowd, those who might not be schooled in the art of not breaking furniture.
