I have been living in Port Louis for 24 years and the one thing that literally takes my breath away is the view from the top of Signal Mountain. It is one of those things that you have to do, at least once in your life, especially if you live in Mauritius. The way up the mountain can be difficult for some if you are not used to long walks uphill. To make this walk more enjoyable, you should wear comfortable running shoes, bring a bottle of water to keep you hydrated, and a sweater so you don’t catch a cold. You can climb the mountain in the morning or in the afternoon. It is not advisable to go up at noon as the weather is scorching.
Morning people should hike at all costs just before sunrise, around 5am, and bring a flashlight if possible. The cool breeze on your face, the smell of fresh air and that feeling of being so close to nature, despite being in the busy capital of Port Louis, will make you disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle. As you go up you will see how the landscape changes. From buildings, parking lots and houses you will be able to see the majestic mountain range and hear the light breeze rusting the leaves of the mountain trees.
This ride is an experience not to be missed at all costs. The higher you go, the lighter your surroundings will become, the Sun will slowly defeat the darkness. You will have the opportunity to admire this city of Mauritius from above and realize how small things can be. The view over the harbor and Caudan Waterfront is like art. The next thing you know, you hear the birds singing and in no time you will be at your destination; the top of Signal Mountain. The sun rays breaking through the clouds and the vast endless view over the ocean will take your breath away the same way it takes mine every time. Take time to breathe in the sensation and inflate your lungs with fresh air.
The feeling of being one with more than is material never goes out of style. If you want to see these rays of light disappear into the conquering darkness, you must hike up Signal Mountain at sunset. There are more people who climb the mountain in the evening than in the morning. You can hear busy Port Louis and witness the noise slowly fade away. The view is just as great in the evening as it is in the morning. You won’t regret for a second going up Signal Mountain.
